Dear friends of VIENNA DESIGN WEEK, once again Vienna will become a city full of design! The 11th edition of the festival takes place between 29 September and 8 October 2017 with more than
100 events all over the city.
VIENNA DESIGN WEEK is structured around two key features that change each year: the focus district with the headquarters, and the guest country. Taking the spotlight this year: the 15th district and Romania. So there will be quite a few surprises!
Also as regards organisation: the 11th festival year is introducing several innovations. The festival team is now planning and organising everything in a new location; VIENNA DESIGN WEEK has moved house – from the Danube Canal to Schwarzenbergplatz, from Praterstrasse to Mahlerstrasse.
Our formats are being constantly renewed – as behoves a festival. We have smartened up the traditional features a little, worked intensively on others; but, whatever the case, we have been garnering some very fruitful ideas about the next festival decade!
The jury of the format Stadtarbeit was able to choose five outstanding projects out of 58 international submissions. Furthermore the six pairs for the formatPassionswege are fixed and Erwin K. Bauer chooses a playful concept for theGraphic Cooperation Cup this year.
There are also changes in the team: from now on, Julia Hürner will be deputy director. In addition, we’re delighted to welcome several new faces in 2017 to the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK team: Alexandra Toth, Gabriel Roland, Nadia Brandstätter, Annika Strassmair and Julia Riesenberg.
“We have achieved a great deal in the first ten years! We are motivated by the outstanding public response and the international recognition. The study commissioned last year also provides evidence of the effects of the festival in various industrial and economic sectors. Nevertheless, we still have quite a bit of work to do and know very well where we want to go, what we want to achieve. A nation of innovation like Austria needs an entrepreneurial landscape that recognises and exploits the value of creative achievements. And creative people will always need an internationally active platform.”
(Lilli Hollein, Festival Director, VIENNA DESIGN WEEK)
The circle is characteristic for this year's festival campaign. As particle or atom it can be seen as part of a greater whole and thus stands as well for the cooperation, collectivity, experiment and encounter of the different people involved in the festival. Bueronardin heralds in the next episode; Christof Nardin, art director of the festival CI, gives a face to the festival’s coming of age, now in its double figures.
